Hun Many: Para Games Allows Persons with Disabilities to Show Their Abilities

PHNOM PENH: President of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, Lt. Gen. Hun Many, said that the ASEAN Para Games is an opportunity for people with disabilities to showcase their abilities. He said that the public must continue its enthusiastic support to build up the athletes for the upcoming 12th ASEAN Para Games hosted by Cambodia.

On social media, Lt. Gen. Hun Many recalled the words of the President of the Indonesian Paralympic Association that said the Games are not only about winning and losing, but they are an opportunity for disabled athletes to feel accepted.

He wrote, "Indonesia said that in the ASEAN Para Games, winning or losing is of course a factor, but more importantly they are an opportunity for athletes with disabilities to feel that they are as normal as anyone else."

Lt. Gen. Hun Many pointed out that when athletes with disabilities train but do not have the opportunity to showcase their skills, it amounts to nothing; that they need support and encouragement rather than pity; they deserve to participate and be known. This year’s ASEAN Para Games gives them those opportunities.

Cambodia will host the 12th ASEAN Para Games from June 3-9. Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and Cambodia have trained 1,423 athletes (including 317 Cambodians) in 14 sports to compete for the glory of their nations.
